This meditative process — shaping, drying, and polishing — connects you deeply with nature and your inner calm.
The final result? A glowing mud ball that reflects your patience, touch, and spirit.

At Orinasukan in Kyoto, you can enjoy a hands-on hand-weaving experience using a traditional loom. Under the guidance of skilled instructors, you’ll weave your own small piece of fabric by crossing warp and weft threads. Afterwards, tour the Watabun Daikokucho factory—a working Nishijin-ori studio with over 100 years of history. See real obi being woven and hear directly from the craftsmen. This is a rare chance to engage deeply with Kyoto’s rich textile heritage.

■Flow of experience
1) Try Hand-Weaving Yourself
The best way to understand weaving is to experience it firsthand.
At Orinasukan, you’ll use a traditional loom to interlace warp and weft threads, creating your own small piece of fabric.

Experienced instructors will gently guide you through each step, making it easy and enjoyable even for beginners.
Choose your colors and feel the rhythm of weaving—it’s like painting with threads.
This hands-on activity is a perfect way to make a personal, lasting memory of your trip to Kyoto.

2) Visit a Real Working Weaving Studio
After the weaving experience, you’ll have the rare chance to tour the Watabun Daikokucho Factory, established in 1907 in Kyoto’s Nishijin district.
This is not a museum or tourist facility—it’s a fully active workshop where skilled artisans continue to hand-weave Nishijin-ori obi (kimono sashes) as real products.

Though the factory may appear cluttered with tools, threads, and machines, that’s part of its charm.
You’ll witness the true spirit of traditional craftsmanship and hear stories directly from master weavers.
It’s a unique chance to feel the living tradition of Kyoto’s textile culture.

Whenever possible, please wear comfortable clothing.

Additional fees (difference in selected items and shipping charges) must be paid locally.

Even without an interpreter present during the experience, we are able to communicate using gestures or a translation app.

Please note that you will be asked to remove your shoes upon entering the facility. Bare feet are not permitted, so please bring socks. If you forget, we have socks available for purchase at 100 yen per pair.

The silk threads used in the experience — both warp and weft — are the same high-quality silk threads we use in our obi (kimono sashes).

As we close at 4:00 PM, if your experience is scheduled to start at 1:00 PM, there may not be enough time afterward to fully enjoy the exhibits. We recommend arriving 15 to 20 minutes early to view the displays before your experience begins.
