Kyo-Koma
About Kyo-Koma
The Kyokoma is a traditional Japanese spinning top, unique to Kyoto. Unlike typical tops made by carving wood, Kyokoma are crafted by wrapping strips of fabric, often silk or cotton, around a bamboo core. The variety in materials and design gives it a distinct texture and appearance. Today, Kyokoma serves both as a cultural symbol and a toy.
History of Kyo-Koma
Kyokoma originated from spinning tops introduced from China. Initially, it was a courtly pastime where noblewomen crafted tops from kimono scraps. Over time, the practice spread to the general public, becoming part of traditional play. Production saw a decline during the late 20th century but was later revived by artisans.
