Kyo-Uchiwa
About Kyo-Uchiwa
Kyoto uchiwa (Kyoto-style hand fan) has a long tradition rooted in Japanese culture. Unlike typical fans, the handle is inserted separately, giving it a distinct structure known as "inserted handle"
History of Kyo-Uchiwa
The origins of the Kyoto uchiwa trace back to the Nanboku-chō period, when pirates (wakō) brought Korean-style fans to Japan. These fans were introduced to Kyoto through Fukakusa, a noble retreat. The inserted-handle design became popular during the Edo period, with decorated court fans influencing its development. Over time, Kyoto uchiwa spread to the general public, establishing the current style.
