10:00 – Arrive at Tsutsumi Asakichi Urushi store “Und.” and meet your guide

– Meeting Time: 10:00 (Reception opens from 9:50)

10:00 – 10:30 – Tour the store and the factory

Tour the store and the factory(including its private area which is not open to the public). See the daily work of urushi lacquer artisans.

10:30 – 11:25 – Experience in lacquering chopsticks

10:30 – 11:30 – Experience the technique of “fuki-urushi” for applying Urushi lacquer to a pair of chopsticks. Receive the chopsticks as a present.

11:30 – 11:55 – Enter the main hall of Bukkoji Temple

Walk to the nearby Bukkoji Temple together with your guide

Enter the main hall of Bukkoji Temple and marvel at its beautifully Urushi-coated interior. Learn about the use of Urushi for restoration of temples.

11:55 – 12:30 – Have lunch

Have lunch with local ingredients using “asagi-wan” Urushi bowl at “D&Department” restaurant

12:30 – End of tour

Dismissal Location: Bukkoji Temple (397 Shinkai-cho, Shimogyo-ku, Kyoto 600-8084)

After completion, disperse on your own.

    Important Information
  • Please refrain from coming with large luggage as there is no space to store it
  • The factory has narrow lanes and you will use Urushi for the workshop. It is recommended to come with clothes that you don't mind getting dirty (you will be given gloves for the activity).
  • Please inform us in advance if you have food restrictions or food allergies. The lunch consists of monthly-changing local ingredients: white rice, main dish, two bowls with side dishes and a clear broth soup.
  • This tour does not include transportation and there is no car parking. Please arrive to the factory by public transport.
  • We accept bookings for this tour regardless of the number of applicants. However, a minimum of 2 participants is required for the tour to operate. We sincerely regret to inform you that if the minimum number of 2 participants is not met, we may have to cancel the tour. In such cases, we will notify you by the day before your scheduled participation date, and we will provide a full refund of any payments you have made.

    Urushi is the sap of the lacquer tree, a precious gift of nature that can only be extracted from a mature tree 10 to 15 years old in the amount of one milk bottle.
